# Car Ride Home Conversations: Helping your Athlete Create a Caring Team Environment

A caring team culture isn't created by coaches alone. Every athlete contributes to whether teammates feel welcomed, supported, included, and valued.

Use the car ride home as an opportunity to help your athlete reflect on the impact they have on others and the type of teammate and leader they want to become. Use simple questions starters to spark conversation about what it means to be a good teammate and how she can support her team in creating a caring culture.

## Being a Great Teammate

- How did you support a teammate today?
- Who could use a little extra encouragement right now?
- What is one way you helped make practice or the game more positive for someone else?
- Did you celebrate someone else's success today?

## Creating Belonging

- Did you help someone feel included today?
- Was there a teammate you spent time getting to know?
- Did anyone seem left out? What could you do next time?
- What can you do to help a new teammate feel welcome?
- How do you know when someone feels like they belong?

## Leadership

- What does leadership look like on your team?
- When did you lead by example today?
- Did you use your words to encourage someone?
- What is one way you can be a stronger leader this week?

## Caring for Others

- How did you show kindness today?
- Who made your day better today?
- Whose day did you make better?
- What is one small thing you can do tomorrow to support a teammate?
- How can you help create a team where everyone feels valued?

## Responding to Challenges

- Did a teammate make a mistake today? How did the team respond?
- How can you support teammates when things don't go their way?
- What can you do when you notice someone feeling frustrated or discouraged?
- How do you want your teammates to respond when you make a mistake?

## Reflecting on Impact

- What do you want to be known for on your team?
- How do you help make your team stronger beyond your performance?
- What impact do you hope to have on your teammates this season?

## Weekly Reflection

Ask your athlete:

> "What did you do this week to help someone else on your team feel cared about?"

## A Parent Reminder

Sports are about more than developing athletes, they are opportunities to develop leaders, friends, and teammates. The most successful athletes are not always the ones who score the most points or earn the most playing time. Often, they are the ones who help others feel cared about, seen, supported, and connected.

Every athlete has the power to create a caring environment. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word, a welcoming smile, or the decision to include someone.
